Dear fellow music-lovers,
It’s been awhile since I last posted,so here I am today bringing you something that’s utterly cool. Ever heard of the CUP phenomenon?
Well, most of the music enthusiast would be aware of Anna Kendrick’s song “When I’m gone” where she uses a plastic cup, plays around with it, to create some amazing music. Not only the video went viral,it seemed like the whole of the world went into a frenzy doing the CUP thing! A lot many cover versions came up with artists clapping and tapping onto cups, flipping it in the air and catching them throughout their performances. It’s really a treat to the eyes and your ears as well.
But the question of the hour is : Who invented the CUP Game? Did Anna Kendrick do it? Also did Anna write the lyrics of the song “When I’m gone”? No,not really. Listed here are some interesting facts behind the cup song:
The origin of the Cup game dates back to 1980s, when it was popular among the youth groups and kids in particular. But it was Rich Mullins who uses the Cup Game in his “Screen Door” music video, where from it all started. Rich Mullins was an American contemporary Christian music singer and songwriter best known for his worship music.
In fact the song “When I’m gone” was originally written and sung by a musical group : Carter Family, who was a famous traditional American folk music group of the early 20th century. Although it was J.E. Mainer, a fiddler from North Carolina, who reconstructed the Carter original into the strummy version with a chorus that you’ll recognize from Pitch Perfect (movie featuring Anna Kendrick).
Then came Lulu and the Lampshades, a British band, who remade the original folk song and paired with the Cups rhythm in their video. Although it did not grasp that much of attention of the viewers. It was actually Anna Burden who did a cover of the Lulu and Lampshades version of “When I’m Gone” giving her own touch to it,which created the buzz in the entire internet and that’s how Anna Kendrick learned the Cup game and used it in the movie.
It’s not too hard a skill to learn but it surely takes a huge amount of practice and patience to master it. So,here’s a cover(cup)version of the song “I don’t wanna live forever” (originally sung by Zayn Malik and Taylor Swift) which I think is absolutely fabulous. The music video features talented musicians Kurt Hugo Schneider, Madilyn Bailey, Kina Grannis and Sam Tsui. These four people have nailed the Cup Game completely! Their creativity and synchronization will definitely keep you glued. So don’t waste another fleeting moment and come witness the awesomeness…
Stay tuned for more interesting music and musical insights.
Until next time.
